How the Stars Learned to Twinkle

Long, long ago, before you were born, before your grandparents were born, the stars did not twinkle at all. They simply hung in the sky, shining flat and still, like silver buttons on a dark coat.

The smallest star of all was named Twink, and Twink was curious about everything.

“Why do we just hang here?” Twink wondered. “Wouldn’t it be nice to say something to the sleeping world below?”

So one night, Twink tried an experiment. She scrunched up all her light — then let it shine — then scrunched it up again. Bright… soft… bright… soft.

Far below, a little child looked up and gasped. “Look! That star is winking at me!” And the child waved, and smiled, and felt a little less alone in the dark.

Twink was delighted. She showed the star beside her, who showed the star beside her, and soon the trick spread all across the sky.

Bright, soft, bright, soft. The whole heavens began to shimmer and dance, every star winking down at every sleepy child, as if to say: We see you. Goodnight. Sweet dreams.

And that is why, to this very day, the stars twinkle — a whole sky full of gentle winks, watching over you while you sleep.

So next time you look up, wink back. The stars will be so happy you did.

The end.
