Mittens and the First Snow
One winter morning, a little kitten named Mittens woke up, stretched her tiny paws, and looked out the window.
The whole world had turned white!
“What is it?” Mittens wondered, her eyes wide. She had never seen snow before.
She scampered to the door and out into the garden. Crunch, crunch, crunch went the soft cold snow beneath her paws. A snowflake landed right on her pink nose. Cold! She sneezed a tiny kitten sneeze. “Achoo!”
Mittens pounced at the falling flakes. She rolled in the fluffy drifts. She chased her own tail in a great white cloud of snow, until she was quite worn out — and quite, quite chilly.
Her little paws were cold. Her whiskers were frosted. And suddenly Mittens missed something very much: home.
She trotted back to the door and slipped inside, where the fire crackled warm and orange, and a soft blanket waited on the rug.
Mittens curled up right in front of the fire, close and cozy, and the warmth soaked into her cold little paws. Ahhh.
Outside, the snow kept falling, soft and quiet. But inside, Mittens was warm and safe and sleepy.
She tucked her nose beneath her tail, gave one last happy purr — purr, purr, purr — and drifted off to sleep by the glowing fire.
The end. 🐱
