Pip the Hedgehog Who Shared

Deep in the hedgerow lived a little hedgehog named Pip, and Pip loved autumn best of all. Because in autumn, the leaves came down — red and gold and crackly — and Pip could build the coziest bed in the whole world.

All day he worked, rolling in leaves and carrying them one by one. By nightfall he had the biggest, softest, most enormous leaf-bed any hedgehog had ever seen.

Pip snuggled down. So cozy.

But then he heard a tiny shiver. Brr, brr. Just outside his hollow, a little field mouse sat all alone, with no leaves at all, trembling in the cold.

Pip looked at his great big pile. He didn’t really need all of it, did he?

“Come,” said Pip. “There’s plenty of room.”

The little mouse burrowed in beside him, and Pip tucked leaves around them both.

And do you know what? With two of them curled up together, sharing their warmth, the bed felt even cozier than before.

“Thank you, Pip,” yawned the mouse.

“Goodnight,” yawned Pip.

Outside, the autumn wind blew cold — but inside the leaf-bed, two little friends slept warm and snug, all night long.

The end. 🦔
