Princess Elowen and the Lost Lullaby
Every kingdom keeps a treasure. Some keep gold. Some keep jewels. Princess Elowen’s kingdom kept a song — the Royal Lullaby — and every night at moonrise, the palace singers sang it from the tallest tower, so that every child in the land could fall asleep to the same gentle tune.
But one night, the tower was silent.
“The lullaby is lost!” cried the palace singers. “We opened the golden songbook, and the page was empty!”
All across the kingdom, children lay wide awake. Something had to be done — and Elowen, who was small but very determined, laced up her boots.
“A princess,” she said, “does not let bedtime go missing.”
She followed the silence out of the palace and into the night. At the mill, she asked the miller’s wife, “Do you remember the lullaby?”
“Only a piece,” said the miller’s wife, and hummed three soft notes — the part about the meadow. Elowen tucked the notes into her heart and walked on.
At the harbor, an old fisherman remembered another piece — the slow part, like waves. Into her heart it went.
At the very edge of the kingdom, a grandmother rocking an empty cradle remembered the ending — the part that fades away like a candle being carried down a hall. Elowen gathered that too.
And standing there under the stars, she understood. The lullaby had never lived in the golden songbook at all. It lived in pieces, in people — in everyone who had ever been sung to sleep. The book was just paper. The song was the kingdom itself.
Elowen climbed the tallest tower, took a deep breath, and sang — the meadow part, the waves part, the fading-candle ending — all the pieces joined together by one brave, gentle voice.
The song floated out over the rooftops. And in every house, children sighed and settled and slept, and parents smiled, and the palace singers wept happy tears and wrote it all down again.
The King found Elowen afterward, half-asleep on the tower stairs, and carried her to bed.
“You found the treasure,” he whispered.
“It was never lost,” she murmured. “It was just… everywhere.”
And the kingdom slept, all under one song, with its bravest princess dreaming in the middle of it.
The end. 👑
