Princess Mabel and the Quiet Crown
Princess Mabel was the busiest princess a castle ever had. She galloped down hallways. She bounced on thrones. She rang the dinner bell just to hear it clang.
But in her kingdom there was a rule: on the night of the full moon, the youngest royal must wear the Quiet Crown — a small silver crown, light as a whisper — from supper until sleep.
“What does it do?” asked Mabel, wrinkling her nose.
“You’ll see,” said the Queen, and gently set it on her head.
The Quiet Crown had only one magic: while you wore it, you had to be still and listen.
Mabel sat on the window seat, wiggling. Being still was HARD. But slowly… slowly… the wiggles settled. And that’s when the castle began to show her its secrets.
She heard the fire in the great hearth, purring like an enormous cat.
She heard the old castle beams stretch and sigh, settling down for the night, the way they had for a hundred years.
She heard the fountain in the courtyard, playing a tiny silver song she had galloped past a thousand times and never once noticed.
She saw the moon rise over the kingdom — HER kingdom — all the little houses with their windows going gold, then dark, one by one, as everyone inside was tucked into bed.
“Oh,” whispered Mabel. “It was all here the whole time. I was just too busy to see it.”
When the Queen came to tuck her in, Mabel was already half asleep, the Quiet Crown on the pillow beside her.
“Well, little one? What does the crown do?”
“It doesn’t do anything,” Mabel yawned, smiling. “It lets everything else do something.”
The Queen kissed her forehead. “Spoken like a true princess.”
And Mabel slept — still and deep and royal — while the castle purred and sighed and sang softly all around her.
