Spark the Dragon Learns to Glow
Spark was the littlest dragon on the mountain, and he had a problem: he could not breathe fire.
His big sister breathed great orange whooshes. His cousins breathed crackly sparks. But when Spark puffed his cheeks and blew as hard as he could — pfff — out came nothing but a tiny curl of smoke, like a birthday candle just blown out.
“Puff HARDER,” said his cousins.
So Spark puffed harder. And harder. He went red in the face. He stomped his little feet. PFFF! Nothing. Just smoke, and a hiccup.
That night, Spark sat by himself at the mouth of the cave, feeling small. The mountain was dark and quiet. He was too tired to puff hard anymore. So he just breathed — slow and soft, in… and out… in… and out…
And something happened.
On his slowest, gentlest breath, a light came out. Not fire — a glow. Soft and golden, like moonlight through honey, it drifted from his mouth and hung in the air, warming the dark without burning anything at all.
“Oh!” whispered Spark. He breathed again, slow and calm. The glow grew — gentle and round, lighting up the cave mouth like a lantern.
His mother appeared beside him, eyes wide and warm. “Spark,” she breathed. “Do you know how rare that is? Any dragon can burn. But a dragon who can glow — who can make light without fire — that is the kind of dragon everyone needs at bedtime.”
And it was true. From that night on, when the little dragons of the mountain were scared of the dark, they didn’t want the fire-breathers. They wanted Spark — who would sit beside them and breathe, slow and gentle, filling the cave with soft golden light until every last dragon was asleep.
Spark never did learn to breathe fire. He never needed to.
He glowed.
The end. 🐉
