The Moon Who Couldn't Sleep

Every single night, the Moon climbed high into the sky to watch over the sleeping world. She watched the owls and the rooftops and the little houses with their lights winking out, one by one.

But the Moon had a secret. She was very tired.

“I can’t sleep,” she sighed. “If I close my eyes, who will keep the sky bright for the children?”

A small child at a window heard her. “Dear Moon,” she whispered, “you don’t have to stay awake for me. Look — I have my own little nightlight, and my teddy, and my warm blanket. You can rest now.”

The Moon smiled a soft, silvery smile. “Truly?”

“Truly,” said the child. “Even the Moon needs to sleep.”

So the Moon found the softest, puffiest cloud in the whole sky and pulled it up like a blanket. She let her light grow gentle and dim, like a candle burning low.

“Goodnight, little one,” she whispered.

“Goodnight, Moon,” said the child.

And for the very first time, the Moon closed her eyes — and the stars kept watch, twinkling quietly, so she could rest until morning.

The end. 🌙
